What is viral marketing? Perhaps you've never heard of it. Viral marketing describes any strategy that encourages individuals to pass on marketing messages to others, creating the potential for exponential growth in the message's exposure and influence. It is essentially “word of mouth” marketing designed to take advantage of today’s interactive channels and like a virus, viral marketing takes advantage of rapid multiplication to explode the message from a few people who actually absorbed your original message that are now passing it on to more people. The great W.C. Fields once said, “All I ask is for an unfair advantage.” View the number of car dealers in that are registered dealers and then look up the number of websites that are currently online. Internet- The internet wave of viral marketing can be a funny email, a quirky video attachment or anything that will make a person click to explore what everybody is talking about. Have you done this? A mate sends you an email and it says "OMG ('Oh my God'- for you not so internet savvy people) you HAVE to check this out!" and the message spreads once again because if your mate thinks it's great, then more than likely you will too. There is the first stem of the flow to spreading the message. There are countless ways to get your message out to potential customers. Does your website have a video presentation on it personally inviting the online visitor (potential customer) to the dealership? Does your website have a free petrol savings downloadable booklet with coupons from a local petrol merchant or just a petrol efficiency tips manual? Does your website have a "secret" page to visit to get a free gift when they say the 'magic word' or 'password' upon arrival to your dealership? All of these are prime examples of viral marketing that are very inexpensive to establish and have no ongoing expense with the exception of your internet hosting. Radio, tv and print- The viral marketing in radio and tv are much stronger campaigns than print, but print viral marketing can still be effectively used in conjunction with free giveaway vouchers or discount coupons. Radio and tv viral marketing is working when you sing along with the radio of an advertisement or know the words of the tv ad. Do you know your competitors ads? As soon as their ad starts playing, do you have an initial response to it? This initial response is viral marketing because it's the prelude to their message. When someone hears or sees something for the first time, it has to make an immediate impression in order for it to be effective and "viral" worthy. Shock value is always good and the jaw dropping reaction is always good for telling someone. The comedy value is much, much better. Everybody loves to laugh and it gets those endorphins released and gives us a feeling of self worth and well being. When creating your ads for radio and tv, are you just like everybody else with your free giveaways and your "old school" call to action message? Or are you original, unique, different and worthy of being talked about the next day AFTER someone's initially heard your message? |
